Preparation of technical documentation for the use of geothermal energy in the area of the City of Križevci
City of Križevci ·Croatia
About this project

The potential of geothermal energy in the City of Križevci area arises from its location in the area of the former Pannonian Basin, geological structure and favorable geothermal gradient. In the area City of Križevci there is a geothermal well Križevčanka-1, the existence of which has been determined by previous research, and whose size, reservoir characteristics and its energy power should be confirmed through additional research. The aim of the project is to use the geothermal potential for energy purposes to heat existing publicly owned facilities located in the immediate vicinity of the existing well, as well for potential commercial utilization.

Bilateral cooperation results
The donor partner from Iceland, Efla h.f., brought valuable expertise and experience in geothermal energy utilization, which significantly enhanced the project's outcomes. The partnership provided technical insights and best practices from Iceland, a global leader in geothermal energy, enabling the project team to approach the exploration and documentation phases with a more advanced understanding. The donor partner's involvement also facilitated a study trip to Iceland, where Croatian participants observed operational geothermal energy systems and learned about their integration into local communities. This knowledge exchange broadened the project's scope and strengthened its technical and strategic framework. The bilateral cooperation led to several key results. Croatian participants gained firsthand experience and practical knowledge during a study trip to Iceland, which included workshops and field visits to geothermal facilities. The donor partner contributed to the development of technical documentation by sharing best practices and ensuring alignment with international standards. This cooperation not only improved the quality of the project outputs but also fostered stronger ties between Croatian and Icelandic stakeholders, paving the way for future collaborations in renewable energy. The collaboration has proven mutually beneficial, and both parties have expressed interest in exploring additional projects, particularly in the implementation phase of geothermal energy systems in Križevci. Future cooperation could include joint applications for funding, further knowledge exchange, and the development of advanced geothermal energy projects that align with Croatia’s and Iceland’s renewable energy goals.
