Background

In Debrecen and the surrounding region, significant economic, social and environmental changes have taken place in recent years: major investments, issues concerning the use of public funds, environmental conflicts, housing and social problems, local government decisions and civil society initiatives are shaping local public life. Understanding these developments requires reliable, accessible local information that is independent of political and economic influence. Maintaining this, however, is becoming increasingly difficult: the funding of independent regional media is vulnerable, the local advertising market is distorted, the culture of reader support is not yet strong enough, and the network of local business supporters has only been partially established. The operation of Debreciner is directly at risk: the financial reserves have been exhausted, and unless new individual subscribers, supporters and local corporate partners can be brought on board, the editorial team may be forced to cease its work. This is not merely a media-related issue, but a democratic and community concern: if independent local media is weakened or disappears, fewer issues will come to light, fewer questions will reach decision-makers, and fewer citizens will have access to the information they need to understand public affairs.

Activities

The planned six-month campaign therefore presents independent local media as a shared civic concern and encourages residents of Debrecen and Hajdú-Bihar, local communities and businesses to become active supporters of this public sphere rather than passive consumers. The project is thus directly linked to the overarching objective of the Civil Fund: it strengthens democratic values, the social foundations of the rule of law, and civic participation. The campaign is designed not as a one-off survival effort, but as a process of building a supporter base and raising funds, with the aim of strengthening Debreciner’s social and financial sustainability. The campaign will be implemented along two interconnected strands: increasing the number of individual subscribers and regular supporters, and developing a transparent network of local corporate supporters that has no influence over the editorial work. Through articles, newsletters, social media content, public events, personal outreach and supporter communications, the campaign will engage local civil society actors and responsible businesses, encouraging them to subscribe, provide support or enter into partnerships.

Expected results

As a result of the campaign, the number of individual subscribers and supporters is expected to increase, a more stable network of corporate supporters is expected to develop, Debreciner’s visibility is expected to grow, and more local residents are expected to understand the importance of their own participation in sustaining independent local media. For participants, the project provides an opportunity to actively contribute to the continued existence of a local democratic institution. For the applicant organisation, the campaign could result in more sustainable operations, stronger social embeddedness and a broader community of supporters. For the wider community, it will mean that Debrecen and Hajdú-Bihar will continue to have an independent local media outlet that makes public affairs visible, provides space for local stories and community perspectives, and raises questions with decision-makers. The long-term aim of the campaign is to contribute to the development of a stronger, more informed and more active local media landscape in Debrecen and the region, so that supporting independent regional journalism becomes not an occasional response to a crisis, but a natural form of civic and community participation. In the longer term, the campaign will contribute to local residents, civil society communities and responsible businesses taking a greater role in sustaining democratic public discourse, thereby strengthening informed and active participation in public affairs.
