Revival of the Only love campaign
Obuditev kampanje Samo ljubezen
Institute 8th of March ·Slovenia
Background
The Love Only campaign is a community initiative to support victims of coordinated hate speech attacks on social media. Through a network of trained volunteers, we want to show individuals who find themselves under a wave of online violence that they are not alone, and to provide them with community support and, where necessary, guidance to legal assistance.
By reviving the campaign, we will strengthen the volunteer network, update the project’s visual identity, establish dedicated social media profiles, and carry out an information campaign to engage new volunteers. Through positive messages and organized support actions, we aim to reduce the impact of hate speech, encourage a culture of respectful communication, and build a solidarity-based online community.
The campaign is aimed primarily at victims of online hate speech, volunteers and supporters, as well as the wider public and social media users. Its objective is to create a safe and supportive space that prevents the isolation of victims and strengthens public awareness of the harmful consequences of online violence.
Activities
The purpose of the action is to mobilise a group of volunteers to provide support on social media to ordinary individuals who have been targeted by hate speech from someone in a position of political or social power and who wish to receive support from the Samo ljubezen (Only Love) project. The hate speech in question relates to the individual’s personal political or religious beliefs or other personal circumstances.
With the new government taking office, we have once again witnessed an increase in hate speech attacks online. Following the tragic death of Dušan Konda, who died by suicide after being subjected to a coordinated attack on social media, we decided to relaunch the action. His death served as a reminder to us that hate speech and the harmful effects of hostile communication can have devastating consequences. During such attacks, individuals may find themselves surrounded almost exclusively by hateful messages and often feel isolated and rejected. The aim of our action is therefore to help prevent such tragic cases.
We seek to mitigate the harmful effects of hate speech on targeted individuals and support victims of hate speech attacks by making it clear to them that they are not alone. We want them to know that a large community stands behind them—a community that supports them, believes in respectful communication, and promotes a culture of kindness, and that this community is larger than the one spreading hate speech. The action also aims to improve the culture of interpersonal communication online and in society more broadly, thereby helping to prevent attacks from escalating and potentially moving from the digital environment into the physical world.
Expected results
New online infrastructure will be established to support victims of coordinated hate speech attacks and online violence. As part of the Samo ljubezen action, 3 new profiles will be set up on Facebook, TikTok and Instagram, dedicated exclusively to the action. The newly established profiles will attract between 4,000 and 5,000 followers.
Support for victims of coordinated hate speech attacks and online violence on social media will be increased. The Samo ljubezen campaign will be implemented through the 3 newly established social media profiles, generating between 20,000 and 30,000 interactions with the content, including likes, comments and shares, as well as potential support actions.
The network of volunteers supporting victims of coordinated online violence will be strengthened. The existing active volunteer base will be expanded by 20 new volunteers, with 30 out of 40 active volunteers participating in the Samo ljubezen action.
Volunteers will be trained to participate in support actions. Training sessions will be held quarterly, with a total of 4 online training sessions, each lasting 2 hours, for both existing and new volunteers. Between 40 and 50 volunteers will successfully complete the training.
