Background

Átlátszó’s three-year project examines the human consequences of the war in Ukraine and the related disinformation mechanisms in Hungary. Public discourse in Hungary regarding the war has been heavily distorted in recent years by anti-Ukrainian, pro-Russian narratives, while regular on-the-ground reporting has become increasingly difficult to finance. The project aims to provide the Hungarian public with firsthand, verified, human-centered information about Ukraine and to help them better recognize manipulated war messages.

Over the course of 36 months, the project will involve regular fieldwork in Ukraine, in-depth reports, documentary films, and disinformation analyses using investigative journalism methods. Through recurring locations and subjects, we will track how communities affected by the war are living, how daily life functions in areas near the front lines, and what burdens civilians, volunteers, refugees, and families who remain in place are bearing. At the same time, we explore the channels, actors, and narratives through which anti-Ukrainian disinformation spreads in Hungary. The project aims to reduce the impact of dehumanizing and manipulative public discourse regarding Ukraine in Hungary, strengthen information resilience, and create greater social space for solidarity with Ukrainians and those fleeing Ukraine.

Activities
