Background

The Foundation carries out the following public-benefit activities:
it supports investigative journalism concerning the exercise of public authority, the use of public funds, and the protection of fundamental rights and other entitlements;
it supports the publication of works produced as a result of investigative journalism, or otherwise ensures their publication;
it supports the submission of requests for access to data of public interest or data made public in the public interest, as well as the initiation and pursuit of related administrative and judicial proceedings;
it facilitates access to data that is of public interest, made public in the public interest, or otherwise accessible to the general public;
it makes the results of its activities public through print and electronic media, the internet, and other publications; organizes conferences, educational presentations, and training courses; and participates in the granting of civil society awards in fields related to its activities;
it cooperates with Hungarian and international civil society organizations and other entities engaged in promoting transparency and combating corruption, sharing with them the experience gained through its own activities.
One of the Foundation’s core activities is providing the supporting and infrastructural framework for the investigative journalism outlet Átlátszó.hu. In numerous instances, the publication of articles has led to concrete action or investigations by state bodies and authorities at the local, national, or EU level.
As part of its support activities, the foundation collects private donations and contributions from the 1% personal income tax allocation; it manages grants and—in line with its mission—provides the financial, organizational, and technological infrastructure for initiatives aimed at promoting public access to information of public interest.
The foundation operates the public interest data request portal, KiMitTud.hu. This platform enables citizens, journalists, and civil society organizations to easily submit requests to public bodies and entities performing public functions.

Activities

Infrastructural support for the public-interest investigative journalism activities of atlatszo.hu:
•    Server operations with high stability and a high level of security.
•    Operation of CMS systems and websites required for publishing and archiving content.
•    CRM operations, including the maintenance of a donor database, a newsletter distribution system, and related automated processes.
•    Operation and maintenance of "civic tech" tools, primarily *KiMitTud* (a platform for public data requests) and *MagyarLeaks* (a secure whistleblowing platform).
•    Operation of other digital content services, such as *Átló* (data visualization), a mobile application, and solutions designed for processing and publishing unique data sources.
The organization conducts several fundraising campaigns throughout the year. In addition to its well-established "1% tax donation" and year-end countdown campaigns, it runs one targeted crowdfunding campaign annually to support the production of *Átlátszó*'s documentary films. Six newsletters for supporters are sent out each year, covering the foundation’s activities, the results of *Átlátszó*'s work, ways to provide support, and ongoing fundraising campaigns. Two campaign plans, along with their associated communication packages, are developed annually.
To promote the submission of public data requests, the organization hosts webinars and encourages the use of the *KiMitTud* platform for requesting information. The initiative facilitates the publication of further investigative content on Átlátszó, thereby supporting civic causes such as taking action against environmentally damaging practices.

Expected results

By the end of the funding period, *KiMitTud* and the process of requesting data of public interest are more clearly recognized as tools for exercising democratic rights. Through targeted communication and knowledge transfer, new user groups become familiar with these tools.
Users find it easier to identify data custodians and perceive the data request process as more accessible; the website features a modern design, and the documents obtained are organized into a searchable database.
A development roadmap, a UX audit, a feasibility study on AI-powered search capabilities, and a clear internal system of responsibility for coordinating development efforts are in place.
Supporters have a more precise understanding of the infrastructure their donations help sustain.
By the end of the funding period, the foundation consistently documents and presents—in an accessible manner—the concrete outcomes resulting from data of public interest, investigative reports, and civil society collaborations.
Democratic oversight is strengthened, and public institutions fulfill transparency requirements.
By the end of the funding period, *Átlátszó* remains a leading investigative journalism center within the Hungarian media sector. Its content is regularly cited by other media outlets, professional organizations, civil society partners, public policy stakeholders, and decision-makers.
*Átlátszónet* and *atlatszo.hu* are active within various civil, professional, and international networks; these collaborations are strategically planned, and civil society partners are better equipped to utilize the tools provided by *Átlátszó*. The organization carries out 10 fundraising campaigns and contributes to a total of 8,000 requests for public interest data. They facilitate the publication of 1,500 articles, which deliver important information to 10 million web visitors.
